Elderly Depression – What We Should Know



Depression is common problem suffered by the elders. In fact, this mental problem affects more senior people over time. The worst part is that it may lead into a suicidal thought and act. To put it simply, depression may increase the suicide rates among old people. Basically, they are also easily depressed. Some people believe that elderly enjoy their old age in a peaceful manner due to their life accomplishments. This is a completely wrong assumption.

Old People Suffer from Mental Problems

As people age, they will suffer from many health problems as their physical condition deteriorates. They get diabetes, rheumatism, high blood pressure, and many others. However, this may not automatically turn those people into a depression as there are many health treatments that they can get. Not to mention there are also many therapies available. In order to avoid depression, they must enjoy a healthy lifestyle.

Old people easily feel blue or down when compared to young ones. This is where mental health supervision is needed. Professional caregivers are able to help senior people to overcome depression and social withdrawal. Psychotherapy is also a good treatment to prevent old people from suffering depression. They can share their suicidal thoughts to an expert through that treatment. In a nutshell, it’s a therapeutic method to cope with mental problems among the elderly.
